Choice: via Internet or via Satellite

The Choice plan, as with all the DIRECTV packages, now lets you choose between getting it "via internet" or "via satellite". Via the internet lets you bypass having to install a dish at your home. The downside is you'll miss out on some channels, have less 4K options and won't be able to use the Genie DVR (only the Gemini DVR applies). Both cost the same and come with a 2-year price guarantee.

Here's the full list of channels you won't get with the Internet-only version of DIRECTV. The more popular ones are MSNBC, Pursuit Channel and Victory. DIRECTV SportsMix (multiple sports channels on one screen) also isn't available via internet. The rest are mostly shopping and faith-based so not quite as valuable...

Cost breakdown: DIRECTV Choice

What's the actual cost for Choice? Here are all the statement line items, including DVR, installation and other monthly charges. Keep in mind state or local governments can add additional charges to your bill. The set-up below assumes the Genie DVR with 1 TV hooked up.

Current deals for Choice include a 2-year price guarantee and a Visa gift card for new customers. There's also a $10/mo discount for having paperless billing and autopay setup within 30 days of activation. After 2 years, the contract ends and rolls over into a month-to-month (cancel anytime) and you pay the prevailing rate at that time.

Hidden fees and penalties

All applicable fees for this plan are in the table above. The following are other fees you may encounter, though they have much less impact on your monthly cost.

DIRECTV's other fees

The activation fee is a one-time charge of $19.95 to setup your equipment (this is often discounted though, depends on your installation). The Government fee is monthly and depends on your zip code -- it's usually $1-$3/mo.

Penalties:

• Early termination fee - if you break your contract before the 2-year contract ends, you're on the hook for $20/mo for every month left.
