Liberty 25 Plan
Liberty 25 gets you 25 Mbps of download speeds with a 25 GB Priority Data Cap. Twice as fast and double the cap space of Liberty 12, this package is a smart fit for a household of up to around 4. With respect to the Priority cap, if you use up all 25 GB in any given month, your speeds will be slowed to about 5 Mbps (still plenty fast for 1 to 2 people).
- Download: 25 Mbps
- Upload: Up to 3 Mbps
- Data Allowance: 25 GB /mo
- - free from 3am - 6am
- - after 25 GB, you're slowed to 1-5 Mbps
- Contract: 2 years
- Up-front fees: $0
Assuming all the specs in this plan work for you, keep in mind that all Liberty plans slow down a bit during evening hours (this is due to the fact that Liberty runs off a slightly slower satellite than the newer/faster Unlimited Exede plans). Specifically, from about 5 PM to 2 AM, speeds can be noticeably slower than the advertised 25 Mbps. From 2 AM to 5 PM, you're guaranteed the full 25 Mbps. So, for example, if you routinely need to run multiple video streams at night, Liberty plans may not be the best option for you... instead, Viasat's Unlimited plans might be your best bet. Availability depends on your location across the United States -- most folks have access to one or the other. If you have access to both, we recommend you try the Unlimited version first.
PERFECT FOR: a mid-size family that streams a lot of video, preferably during the day.
Other Viasat packages
Note that all Liberty plans feature "Liberty Pass" which lets you continue to surf at acceptable speeds (1-5 Mbps) even after you exceed your monthly allowance. After you hit your cap, Unlimited Viasat plans throttle you when internet usage is high in your area.
Total Cost: Viasat Liberty 25
Here's the full cost breakdown for the Viasat Liberty 25 plan, including receiver, installation and other misc monthly charges. Keep in mind state or local governments can add access charges to your bill. The set-up below assumes you're using your own modem (which we recommend). Otherwise, you'll pay an additional $12.99/mo to lease one from Viasat.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much slower is Liberty 25 at night?
From 5 PM to 2 AM, you'll only notice slower download speeds if you're running over 2 streams or playing very high resource games. Otherwise, you're not likely to experiece a big difference.
Can I switch from Viasat Liberty to Unlimited and vice versa?
If you have access to both (depends on your state and county), yes. Otherwise, we've noticed most folks in rural areas do just fine with either (especially compared to the alternatives).
Can I try it out first?
For the most part, you'll need to commit to a 2-year contract. In the rare situations where reliability isn't quite there (eg, your address is on the geographical edge of coverage), you should be given the option to opt out. Viasat (Exede) also have a Hibernation plan which lets you pause your service for any reason for 2-6 months.
Why does my friend in the next state over have Exede (Viasat) Unlimited and I don't?
Viasat has a couple different internet satellites in orbit. One is for Liberty, the other Unlimited. Since coverage depends on your proximity and angle to the either satellite, you're likely just outside the coverage boundary for Unlimited.

Our Viasat rating: 97/100
If you live in the country or, for whatever reason, don't have a traditional internet provider in your area, Viasat is an excellent option. Gone are the days of snail-like satellite internet. Viasat/Exede has new satellites in the sky and updated tech to match. The end result is dramatically improved download speeds (up to 100 Mpbs).
With over 750,000 customers, we consider them the best non-wired internet option available. If cable, fiber or fixed wireless internet aren't viable options, give Viasat a serious look.
