Unlimited Bronze 12 Plan
Compared to the Exede Liberty plans, Unlimited works better for folks that need more bandwidth during the day and, in general, want more flexibility with their streaming/downloading. With Liberty, once you hit your monthly data cap, your speeds are usually slowed down for the rest of the month (1-5 Mbps). With Unlimited Bronze 12, for example, you get 80 GB of data at a speed of 12 Mbps. If you exceed 80 GB, your speed could be prioritized behind other customers during extremely high usage times. However, those speeds will still be quite high and you may not even notice a differene (i.e., much faster than the 1-5 Mbps with Liberty). Even better, your speed is likely to jump back up to 12 Mbps later that night and for the majority of the rest of the month.
- Download: 12 Mbps
- Upload: Up to 3 Mbps
- Data Allowance: 80 GB /mo
- - stream/download any time of day
- - after 80 GB, you're slowed at times
- Contract: 2 years
- Up-front fees: $0
As mentioned above, Unlimited plans give you quite a bit more freedom than Liberty. With Liberty, large downloads are better off scheduled during the "Free Zones" in the middle of the night (where bandwidth didn't count against your cap). With the Unlimited Bronze 12 package, stream and download at anytime, no need to wait. Bronze 12 is the starter Unlimited package with a 80 GB/mo cap. That's generally plenty for a family of around 2-4 (including YouTube junkies :). Speeds of 12 Mbps let you stream more than 2 movies at the same time, without buffering or a loss in quality (very large TVs may slow you down however). If your household often streams content on more than 3 devices at a time or has very large TVs, you may want to consider the next plan, Unlimited Silver 25.
PERFECT FOR: a mid-size family that streams content on up to 2-3 devices at a time.
Other Viasat packages
Note that all Liberty plans feature "Liberty Pass" which lets you continue to surf at acceptable speeds (1-5 Mbps) even after you exceed your monthly allowance. After you hit your cap, Unlimited Viasat plans throttle you when internet usage is high in your area.
Total Cost: Unlimited Bronze 12
Here's the full cost breakdown for the Unlimited Bronze 12 plan, including receiver, installation and other misc. monthly charges. Keep in mind state or local governments can add additional charges to your bill. The set-up below assumes you're using your own modem (which we recommend). Otherwise, you'll pay an additional $12.99/mo to lease one from Viasat.
The current Viasat deal gives you a $20 discount off this plan for 3 months. After 3 months, you'll pay $69.99/mo and that price will be locked in for 2 full years.
- Free installation
- $20 off for 3 months
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the Unlimited Bronze 12 plan have a Liberty Pass too?
No. Liberty Pass is restricted to the Liberty plans only. With all Unlimited packages, surf or stream at anytime, without penalty of restriction.
What if I keep hitting my 80 GB cap?
During heavy congestion (usually around 6-9 PM), your bandwidth may occasionally drop from 12 Mbps to <10 Mbps. At all other times, you'll be at 12 Mbps. If the difference makes a difference, you can upgrade at any time with no fee or penalty.
Can I get a month-to-month contract instead?
Currently, no. Since setup and activation of Viasat/Exede requires a bit more time than with cable/fiber, all plans require a 2 year contract (you can break it for a small penalty, depending on how much time is left)
We have 2 big screen TVs, will this plan work?
Probably not. Unlimited Brownze 12 works great for small TVs, smartphones and tablets. One big screen TV will likely be fine but any more and you'll probably get some buffering or quality issues.
