Actual Costs

Monthly charges and hidden fees

In this section, we review ALL the line items you'll see on your Spectrum bill, hidden fees and charges included. The only required fees added to your bill are a "Broadcast TV Surcharge" ($25.75/mo) and a regular tax (average of $4/mo). Those two apply to all subscribers of this plan.

The Broadcast TV fee is unfortunately pretty common with other live TV providers as well -- it's there to cover the rising licensing costs of local channels. You can't opt out but for most, local channels are a must so it's palatable. The tax varies by state and local government.

DVR: HD Box or Apple TV 4K device

All customers need to choose between an HD Box or Apple TV 4K device. The HD Box is a standard Spectrum receiver and costs $12.50/mo. It lets you watch channels in HD, which is delivered free (other providers charge extra for HD). If you want to record stuff, an additional DVR charge of $4.99/mo applies as well.

The Apple TV 4k device is the better option for folks that want more 4K programming and/or have at least a few streaming accounts. It lets you watch live TV and your streaming content all in one place. It goes for $5.00/mo and an additional $4.99/mo for DVR service that covers up to 50 recorded shows at a time.

Installation: service activation fee

At sign-up, the only one-time fee that may apply is a "Service Activation" charge. That refers to your installation. You can either self-install or have a technician set it up for you. Either way, you'll likely also get charged a $30 activation fee to send your account to active status. It's a one-time fee and sometimes waived (call and ask).

With regard to discounts, there are no obvious ways to lower your bill (for example, with autopay, as other providers offer). The main reason for that is Spectrum's prices are already in the lower range of live TV. If you bundle with internet and/or phone, you can save upwards of 30% so definitely inquire about how that could slash your bill.

Premium movie and channel add-on packs

With Spectrum TV, you can add a bunch of custom programming to any programming plan. From premium movies to sports and international channels, there are about 15 add-on channel packs to choose from. They range in price from $4.99 to $34.99. Here's a quick look:

General channels and sports packs

  • Entertainment View ($15/mo, 70+ channels) - this is their largest and most popular pack. Get over 70+ channels at an excellent price. Just some of the channels included: American Heroes, Boomerang, Cooking, Crime & Investigation, Discovery Family, Disney Junior, ESPN News, Golf, MLB Network, Newsmax, NFL Network, Tennis Channel, etc.
  • Sports View ($7/mo, 20 chs) - this is the best sports pack, especially for fans of multiple sports. beIn Sports, ESPN News, Fox Sports 2, MLB Network, NBA TV, NFL Network, NHL Network, Tennis Channel, etc.
  • Regional Sports Networks, RSNs ($10/mo) - get access to all the games from your local MLB, NFL and NBA teams.
  • Fox Soccer ($10/mo, 1 chs) - just the one channel but they broadcast a TON of soccer matches from all the major leagues.
  • MLB Extra Innings ($34.99/mo, 90 games) - you get over 90 MLB games every week. Choose your TV feed and broadcast team.

International channel packs

All these packs require the Spectrum TV app (not available via your regular receiver). Just login to the app and you'll have access to all the programming.

  • India View ($19.99/mo) - the best option to access to a bunch of Hindi channels and programs.
  • India View Premium ($29.99/mo) - the same as India View with a handful of additional channels like SET Asia, Zee TV, etc.
  • Punjabi View ($4.99/mo) - features JUS Punjabi and Willow TV.
  • Filipino View ($19.99/mo) - includes Filipino Channel, Lifestyle Network, GMA Pinoy and GMA News.

Premium movies and streaming content

Add popular streaming apps and a variety of premium channels. In general, you may save a bit over getting it separately. If you choose the Apple TV device receiver, you'll be able to easily watch all the streaming apps right from your primary program guide.

  • max ($15/mo) - previously known as HBO Max, this pack gives you access to all the content on the max app as well as ALL the HBO channels.
  • Showtime - 6 Showtime channels for $10/mo.
  • Starz pack - 2 Starz channels for $9/mo.
  • Movie Channel - 3 Movie Channels for $5/mo.
  • Cinemax - 9 Cinemax channels for $10/mo.
  • MGM+ - full app access for $6/mo.

TV Select Signature vs Select Plus

As briefly mentioned, TV Select Plus costs $10 more and gives you access to your local Regional Sports Networks (RSNs). If you have a local NFL, MLB or NBA team and watch at least a handful of games a season, it's probably worth the upgrade. More recently, Spectrum is adding an additional bonus of including ESPN+ free for all subscribers of TV Select Plus. Remember, you can change plans at anytime so a lot of folks upgrade during their favorite sports' season and save a few bucks by reverting to Signature the rest of the year.

Spectrum will pay you to switch

Spectrum currently has a deal available where they will cover the cancellation fees to break your current contract and switch to them. Cancellation fees apply with traditional TV providers such as cable and satellite TV (that require a contract). If that's you, before you switch, let a Spectrum support agent know how much time is left on your contract and what it'll cost to break it. In almost all cases, Spectrum will cover the entire charge. Solid offer and definitely take advantage of it if you can't wait out your current contract.

Frequently Asked Questions

If I commit to a contract, will I save more on TV Select?

If you bundle with internet or phone, yes. There are times when Spectrum accepts 1-year contracts on just the TV service and that qualifies you for discounts or free bonuses.

What's the difference between TV Select Signature and TV Select Plus?

TV select Signature is the default TV Select plan. It doesn't include Regional Sports Networks (RSNs; ie, your local NFL, MLB and NBA games). TV Select Plus has the same lineup plus all your RSNs. It costs an additional $10/mo.

Will Spectrum really pay my current cancellation fees?

Yep. The only exception I've seen are incredibly long contracts (greater than 2.5 years). Otherwise, sending over a bill to verify your status with your current provider should do the trick.

How do I add or remove add-on channels to Select?

In most cases, you can login to your account on Spectrum.com and order it directly. Calling also works. You'll usually see the new channels in your program guide within a few hours. Removing packs is just as easy.
